I was a real troublemaker in 3rd grade. I was in Mrs. Rammacker's class and we just never hit it off. Some of my more creative moments involved scratching graffiti onto the air register "I Think You Stink!" Jamie Jaynes was in on that one. Then there was the game 'Spill & Spell.' Well it was my turn and guess what letters popped up on my lucky roll? The *F* word and I fell for the bait! Little did I know that 'Rammacker' was right behind me figuring I would pull such a stunt. (I didn't even know what it meant??).
One of my times out in the hall (many I might add), I found a burnt paper match. So much idle time....That match ended up in the keyhole in the door lock. I kinda forgot about it until I came to school the next day and everyone in 'Rammackers' class was sitting out in the hall AND Mr. Anderson was yankin' the key in and out of the door trying to open it. Of course immediately suspecting that I had something to do with this travesty 'Rammacker' came up to me and asked me if this was my doing? Was I really gonna tell the truth with Mr. 6'6" - and almost unhuman like voice - 'Anderson' standing there? I'll let you draw your own conclusions on that one.
Speaking of Mr. Anderson I have a couple of memories on his account. I was sent down to his office one afternoon (yep, 'Rammacker's' class). I was sitting in the chair just outside of his office. It seemed like forever! I think it was part of the psychology - let 'em sweat it out! Mr. Anderson would come and go, come and go and then I had a brilliant idea....I would just go back up to the classroom and tell 'Rammacker' that I got my lickin'. It all seemed to work just fine. I told her I was sorry and I made it back just in time for gym class. Mr. Young was letting us play kickball and I was playing in the outfield....THEN that 6'6" giant (Mr. Anderson) with his hair blowing in the wind began lumbering down the big hill. Past home plate, past the pitcher, past the infield, to the outfield - right up to me. Then came the famous words "Do you want it here or back in the office?" I opted for choice "B" - because it at least gave me some more time on this Planet. Actually, when we got back in his office he must have known I was sorry because I never did get it (whatever 'it' was?).
Other classmates remember me yelling through the door vent while out in the hall "Give me a chair quick, 'Shirley Quick'." You would have had to of attend WACS in order to get this one!
Even though I did have a little bit of a rough start I was fortunate to have had such caring 4th and 5th grade teachers (Mrs. Collins and Mr. Maher). Yeah I may have seemed pretty quiet during high school but, I did (and still do have) a bit of a rare side to me!
I have to add one last funny story. I think I was in ninth grade and it was Christmas time. My dad took my family out to dinner at Peek'nPeak. As we walked by the bar my older brother Dan elbowed me and said "Check this out." Dancing to 'Jingle Bells' was a very looped 'Lanky' Frank Hutchinson! Man was that a story to tell my classmates the next day! I just could never erase that mental image from my mind every time class began. |
